Elena Lamaak, MA, LMHC

My name is Elena Lamaak, and I am an Art Therapist and Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Iowa.  I received my Master in Counseling & Art Therapy from Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, WI. I have experience in the public school system, a psychiatric hospital, a youth shelter setting, and nursing homes. I enjoy focusing on kids 8 - 12, teenage girls, and women. I work within an expressive art, holistic, strengths based, attachment and trauma based approach for those that are challenged with medical and mental health problems, as well as those seeking growth in emotional, creative, or spiritual ways. I will always focus on wellness and the strengths of my clients, while attending to their issues of concern. My areas of specialty include: depression, anxiety, life transitions, trauma, adjustment difficulties, grief and loss, self-esteem, and anger.

My goal is always to provide a safe and supportive environment for my clients to explore their challenges, thoughts, and emotions. I believe art can provide hope, healing, and transformation in your life! You do NOT have to be a kid or call yourself an artist to participate. The art *process* itself is where the magic happens! It is not about making “good” art — this art is from the inside and it is not always going to look “pretty.” Art Therapy utilizes the use of art materials and the creative process to help clients heal & help them with physical, mental, spiritual and emotional benefits. Art Therapy can help with emotional expression via non-verbal communication, because often unexpressed words and emotions are at the heart of symptoms and behaviors. Benefits can include increasing self-esteem, gaining self-awareness, improving communication, managing behavioral issues, solving problems creatively, reducing stress and anxiety, and developing social skills. Art Therapy gives voice to clients’ experience and stories, as well as provides empowerment for their lives. I work with all different forms of art media, which can include painting, drawing, collage, clay, stories, poems, and other mixed media materials.

I truly look forward to building a relationship with my clients – it is my favorite part of the therapy process! God has shown me the importance of realizing my own brokenness on my journey of healing, as well as the gifts I’ve been given to walk alongside others and their brokenness as well. I will meet you where you are and offer support and truth as you move along in your own journey. It is an honor to walk alongside you as you learn to embrace your God-given identity and enjoy the freedom that comes along with it.

I enjoy spending time with my family, finding ways to use my creativity, baking, gardening, and all things related to health, exercise, and nutrition.
